State by-elections: time for voters to check their letterboxes

Bega, Monaro, Strathfield and Willoughby postal packs arriving

Voters in the Bega, Monaro, Strathfield and Willoughby State by-elections should keep an eye on their mail as postal packs start arriving in letterboxes in each district.

John Schmidt, NSW Electoral Commissioner said postal packs to vote in the upcoming State by-elections will have started arriving in letterboxes from Tuesday, 1 February.

“In these elections voters have the choice of voting in person on election day, voting early at an early voting centre or voting by post.

“For those who want to vote by post, make sure you’re keeping a look-out in your letterbox for when your postal voting pack arrives. It will be sent to all enrolled voters in those districts automatically.

“Once you receive the pack, you must complete your ballot papers by 6pm on Saturday 12 February and return it to us as soon as possible. The cut-off for the Electoral Commission to accept postal votes is 6pm, Friday 25 February,” he said.

Mr Schmidt said voters could follow the “five easy steps” outlined in their postal pack on how to fill out the ballot papers and successfully complete and return the pack.

“Anyone with questions about completing their postal voting pack can find more information our website or call us on 1300 135 736.”

Mr Schmidt said if voters didn’t want to vote by post they could vote in-person, either now at an early voting centre or at a voting centre on election day, 12 February 2022.

“Voters can visit our website – elections.nsw.gov.au – to find their closest early voting centre and its opening hours or they can vote on election day from 8am-6pm.”

The NSW Electoral Commission has introduced a series of measures to minimise risks to the health, safety and wellbeing of electors, election workers, political participants, and others, and reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19.

The NSW Electoral Commission’s COVID safety plan is available on its website and further information about the by-elections is available at elections.nsw.gov.au.
