Less than two weeks to go until the City of Griffith Local government by-election

Voters in the City of Griffith local government area are reminded to cast their vote in the by-election being held on 16 February 2019.

The by-election is being held to elect one councillor and it is compulsory for enrolled electors to vote.

NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt encouraged voters to sign up to the election reminder service provided by the Commission.

This is a free service that sends email or SMS reminders to voters when there is a state or local government election in their district, local government area or ward. You can register at elections.nsw.gov.au.

Mr Schmidt said early voting options for the by-election included pre-poll and postal voting, subject to certain eligibility requirements and including if voters:

  • will be outside their ward or council area on election day
  • will be more than 8km from a polling place on election day
  • will be travelling and unable to attend a polling place on election day
  • are approaching maternity
  • are seriously ill or infirm, and will be precluded from attending any polling place to vote
  • will be working on election day
  • are a person with a disability.

Pre-poll in person early voting closes at 6pm on Friday, 15 February 2019.

Early voting centres are at:

  • Griffith returning officer’s office, 81 Kooyoo Street, GRIFFITH - Monday to Friday: 8.15am – 4pm, Friday, 15 February 2019: 8.15am - 6pm, closed on weekends
  • Griffith Aboriginal Medical Centre, 38-42 Jondaryan Avenue, GRIFFITH - Friday, 15 February 2019: 8am - 6pm

Eligible voters who are unable to vote in person on election day can also still do a postal vote if they meet eligibility criteria.

Postal vote applications close at 5pm on Monday, 11 February 2019 and postal votes must be received by the returning officer by 6pm on Monday, 18 February 2019.

On election day, voters can cast their vote at eight venues across the electorate including Beelbangera, Griffith, Griffith North, Hanwood, Lake Wyangan, Yenda and Yoogali public schools, as well as Wade High School and the Griffith PCYC.
