Call for nomination notice: Kempsey, Shellharbour Ward A and Singleton

Nominating as a candidate

Candidates are invited to nominate for the NSW local council elections in Kempsey, Shellharbour Ward A and Singleton. A person must be enrolled in the council area for which they wish to nominate as a candidate by 6pm, Monday, 20 June 2022.

Nomination forms are available on the NSW Electoral Commission website.

Nominations open on Monday, 20 June and close at midday on Wednesday, 29 June 2022 (nomination day).

Nomination forms and the nomination deposit must be lodged with the returning officer by the close of nominations. Nominations may be lodged in person at the returning officer’s office or by email to candidates@elections.nsw.gov.au. Nomination deposits must be paid in person to the returning officer in cash or by bank, building society or credit union cheque.

A person can be proposed for nomination by either a registered political party or by two electors in the following manner where:

  • the council area is undivided (no wards), by at least two electors enrolled in the council area, or

  • there are wards, by at least two electors enrolled in the ward the candidate is contesting.

Candidate Information Sheets

Each candidate must lodge the candidate information sheet which is included in the nomination form. The candidate information sheet is a statutory declaration which must be properly signed and witnessed for the nomination to be valid.

The NSW Electoral Commission will publish the content of each candidate information sheet on the NSW Electoral Commission website and will make them available for inspection at each returning officer’s office, pre-poll voting office and polling place.

Request to form a group

Candidates are entitled to form a group and may in certain circumstances request a group voting square (also known as a ‘box above the line’) on the ballot paper. Each group requires:

  • a minimum of two candidates

  • each candidate to sign the LG.204 Request to form a group form, lodged with the returning officer by midday on Wednesday 29 June 2022. 

Candidates may request a group voting square if:

  • in the case of a council that is undivided (no wards) – the number of candidates in the group is at least half the number of candidates to be elected in that council area, or
  • in the case of a council divided into wards – there are at least as many candidates in the group as there are candidates to be elected in that ward.

Nomination of candidates

The returning officer for each election will announce the nomination of candidates on Thursday 30 June 2022 at the returning officer’s office. The returning officer’s offices are at the following locations:

Uncontested election

Should the number of candidates nominated for the election be equal to or less than the number of councillors to be elected, the election will be uncontested. Should this occur the declaration of uncontested election will be on Thursday, 30 June 2022 and published on the NSW Electoral Commission website.

Method of voting

The elections will be held on Saturday, 30 July 2022 and conducted by attendance (i.e., in-person) voting and postal voting.

Postal voting applications will open on Tuesday, 21 June at 9 am and close at 5pm on Monday, 25 July 2022.

Postal votes and certificates must be completed by 6pm Saturday, 30 July 2022 and received by the NSW Electoral Commission no later than 6pm Friday, 12 August 2022.

Pre-poll voting will commence on Monday, 18 July and close at 5pm Friday, 29 July 2022.
