Voting reminders causing voter confusion

The NSW Electoral Commission is aware of some misdirected electronic voting reminders received by members of the public today about the NSW State by-elections.

These messages were not sent by the NSW Electoral Commission.

Our elector enquiry centre has received a number of calls from people who are not enrolled to vote in the Bega, Monaro, Strathfield and Willoughby districts saying they have received reminders to vote today.

This has caused some confusion and we will be reviewing the matter further in the coming days. Candidates are reminded that it is an offence under the Electoral Act 2017 for electoral material not to show the proper authorisation and that electoral material must not mislead an elector that it is an official communication from the NSW Electoral Commission.

The NSW Electoral Commission is advising voters via Facebook, our call centre and website that only people enrolled in the district of Bega, or Willoughby, or Strathfield or Monaro are required to vote in State by-elections today. They are also being advised that if they have already voted in these by-elections (including by post), they should not vote in person today.

Candidate seminar

An online candidate seminar was held by the NSW Electoral Commission on Thursday, 10 February. The seminar provided an overview of the postal vote processes including further detail in relation to the scrutiny of the postal vote packs for these by-elections. The seminar included an opportunity for participants to ask questions about any specific issues they wanted clarified.

A copy of the slides from the seminar and the presentation questions and answers are now available on our website.
