Working at Elections

Conducting an election is a major public event. During State and Local Government elections some 5 million NSW electors vote at 2,500 polling places. Elections are large scale logistical exercises conducted in a high profile, legal and time-dependent environment.

You must be an enrolled elector to be offered employment in a polling place or at a Returning Officer's office.

As the NSWEC is responsible for conducting elections with integrity, impartiality and transparency in accordance with the law, it is necessary for all staff to perform their duties with complete political impartiality.

The NSWEC has adopted an Employment policy to ensure recruitment decisions are based on merit and provide equal employment opportunity. Our focus is to provide these employment opportunities to persons living within the local community with appropriate skill set to service that community.

What happens to my EOI?

The Returning Officers assess all EOIs on their merits. Please note the NSWEC cannot guarantee that all suitable applicants will be offered employment. Recruitment decisions will begin shortly before the election, up until election eve. The NSWEC is an equal opportunity employer and carries out its activities mindful of state and federal anti-discrimination legislation. Acknowledgement of your EOI will be sent via email or SMS if these contact details are provided.

What if I am offered a position?

Successful applicants will receive an offer of employment. Upon confirmation of availability and acceptance of a position you will be sent a letter of employment. Election Officials' employment in certain positions is conditional upon satisfactory completion of face to face and/or online training.

Political Neutrality Statement

The NSWEC is committed to maintaining public confidence in the integrity of the electoral system and the impartiality of Election Officials. The NSWEC expects that employees refrain from membership of any political party and from engaging in political activity which could be seen as reflecting adversely on the strict political neutrality of the NSWEC. Any person unable to meet these expectations cannot be considered for employment.

Conflict of Interest Statement

The public is entitled to expect the business of the NSWEC to be conducted with fairness and impartiality. To meet this expectation it is important that Election Officials avoid conflicts of interest.

A conflict of interest exists when it is likely that an Election Official could be influenced, or could be perceived to be influenced, by a personal interest in carrying out their public duty. For example an interest that may give rise to a conflict of interest for an Election Official is a personal relationship with a candidate contesting an election.

An Election Official must disclose any potential or actual conflicts of interest to their Returning Officer or to the Electoral Commissioner.

Privacy Statement

The information collected on the NSWEC Expression of Interest website will only be used to assess your suitability for employment as an Election Official with the NSWEC and ongoing management of your employment if your application is successful.

In submitting an Expression of Interest form you are agreeing to be registered with the NSWEC for temporary employment at NSW State and Local Government elections and by-elections for a period of five years.

Specific payroll information may be retained for longer periods to comply with payroll and taxation legislative requirements.

Applicants and employees may be asked to take part in an anonymous survey about their experience of the recruitment process and working at the NSWEC. Such surveys are entirely voluntary and information gathered is used to improve our recruitment processes.

Personal information collected by the NSWEC is handled in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Act 1998.

Subject to your consent within your Expression of Interest, your personal information will be provided to other electoral administrations for recruitment purposes.

Please note that anyone who accepts a position with the NSWEC may have their personal information and earnings provided to Centrelink for data matching purposes. Centrelink is empowered by section 195 of the Social Security (Administration) Act 1999 (Commonwealth) to request this information to help it detect incorrect payments. Under section 195(4) of the Act, irrelevant information will be destroyed within 13 weeks.
