Voting for the Legislative Assembly

The method of voting for the Legislative Assembly is known as optional preferential.

When you vote for the Legislative Assembly you must place the number '1' in the square next to the name of the candidate to whom you wish to give your first preference vote.

Optional preferential means that you have the option of allocating further preferences. If you wish you can vote for additional candidates. Place consecutive numbers, continuing with the number '2', in the squares next to the names of candidates in order of your preference.

These preferences can play an important part in the election of a member to parliament as is shown in the section on counting the votes for the Legislative Assembly.

The names of each candidate and their political party affiliation are shown on the ballot paper.
